The Phalsa (Grewia asiatica) is a deciduous shrub or small tree, known for its small, tangy, and edible berries. It's native to India and Southeast Asia and is cultivated for its fruit, which is rich in vitamins and antioxidants. The plant has a scraggly appearance with slender, drooping branches and heart-shaped or ovate leaves.

Plant Description:

Growth Habit: A shrub or small tree, typically reaching 3-4 meters in height.

Branches: Slender, drooping, and often densely hairy when young.

Leaves: Alternate, deciduous, broadly heart-shaped or ovate, pointed at the apex, oblique at the base, up to 20 cm long and 16.25 cm wide, and coarsely toothed, with a light whitish bloom on the underside.

Flowers: Small, yellow or orange yellow, borne in dense cymes in the leaf axils.

Fruit: Small, round, dark purple to black berries when ripe, about 1.25-1.6 cm in diameter. The fruit has a thin, whitish bloom and a soft, tender skin. The flesh is greenish white, stained with purplish red near the skin, and has a pleasantly acid, somewhat grapelike flavor.

Bark: Greyish-white or greyish brown.

Environment: Prefers full sun but can tolerate some shade. It can withstand light frosts, but prolonged frost can damage new growth. It thrives in most soil types, including sandy, clay, and limestone soils, but loam improves fruit production.

Other Characteristics: The plant has a high nutritional value and is a good source of vitamins and antioxidants. It's also known for its cooling properties, making it popular in hot climates.
